Bats were guards that Sly Cooper and the gang encountered in "Jailbreak" and "A Tangled Web" of Sly 2: Band of Thieves. They served as the Contessa's secondary rooftop guards.

Description[]

They were gray bats with red eyes and visible fangs/teeth that wore a brown piece of shredded clothing. There are two variants of them in both Prague episodes, "unarmed" ones that, from slightly further distances, briefly fly up into the air before lunging at Sly or another character to bite him/them, and ones that screech to alert other guards around them acting as the megaphone equivalent, both types also have a swipe attack that they do twice up close, similar to the punches that the non-megaphone Paris Frogs and Canada Mountain Goats throw. Like all other secondary rooftop guards, Sly can take them out in three hits, Murray two, and Bentley six.

General Clawfoot, the head of security at Contessa's castle, is a modified version of a regular bat guard.

The bats are so much more common in Jailbreak and this image shows that off well.

Trivia[]

  • Despite having wings, the bats show no ability of true sustained flight.
    • However this is in line with real vampire bats, which prefer to run instead of flying.
      • In spite of that however, if a flyer bat is on the ground and the player is on a rooftop and has the camera facing where they are running, they will actually flap/fly onto said rooftop that Sly or another character is on and bypass needing to jump on a spiderweb trampoline or taking an alternate path, as long as the rooftop is not too high up from the ground. This can especially be seen effectively in Jailbreak as not only does it have much more rooftops that wolves and them can appear on than A Tangled Web, but bats themselves are also a lot more common in Jailbreak making the chances of flyers appearing once or even twice far greater.
    • If Sly were to sneak up on an idle bat while they are "sleeping", he can actually hear them breathing heavily. The sound they make when breathing is similar to a sound the Vultures make when they are idle.
      • The way they "sleep" with their wings folded over them is also somewhat reflective of how bats sleep in real life, minus the hanging upside down part.
    • "Screech" bats screeching to alert other guards is very similar to how real life bats use echo location to determine their surroundings.
      • Interestingly enough though, in the PS2 trailer and in gameplay videos of the Beta, they can be heard emitting the sound the megaphone Ibexes from India make, likely suggesting that it was a placeholder until their screech was finished. This can be seen/heard at around 2:39 in the trailer and at around 0:50 in a video of gameplay of the Beta uploaded by YouTube user "Gou". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FKsVcys3kc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYgG5ZznkDw&t=1545s
