Insolent child! You shall pay dearly for your disrespect! Still, to honor your Cooper ancestry, I will send you to your doom with the beauty of my new firework technique... Flame-Fu!
― The Panda King to Sly moments before they fight[src]

Flame-Fu[note 1] is a technique perfected by the Panda King that incorporates martial arts with fire element.

History[]

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus[]

The Panda King had already perfected the technique just as Sly Cooper infiltrated his stronghold in the Kunlun Mountains in Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus.[1] The Panda King's purpose behind Flame-Fu was to cause destruction in the Kunlun Mountains as revenge for being humiliated by the rich noblemen as a child. He demonstrated his mastery of Flame-Fu during his battle with Sly, but was still bested by the Cooper and defeated.[2]

Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves[]

Flame-Fu returned in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. It first appeared in the fight sequence within the Panda King's meditation state, featuring all four original attack methods. While the Panda King was on the job, he could do a flaming karate chop to attack foes at close range, which would light them on fire.[3]

Method[]

Flame-Fu is used offensively and consists of several attacks:

  • Fireballs: A long-range attack in which the Panda King summons fire from his hands and throws it at Sly whenever he is far away. To avoid this, Sly must constantly move around or hide behind objects.
  • Fiery Wheel: A close-range attack in which the Panda King sweeps one hand across the ground while rotating his body. Sly must jump over it at the right moment to dodge.
  • Palms of Thunder: A close-range attack in which the Panda King slams his palms straight down onto the ground. Sly needs to stay still to keep from getting squashed.
  • Booming Chop: A close-range attack in which the Panda King slams the end of one hand down the center of his body and onto the ground. Sly must run either left or right to avoid this attack.
  • In Sly 3, the Panda King can perform a flaming karate chop, which will instantly burn enemies. It is fairly slow and only works at close range.

Behind the scenes[]

  • In the Japanese version of the first game, "Flame-Fu" is referred to as "Fire Kung Fu", while the remastered version uses the original "Flame-Fu" name.
  • Panda King's named techniques in the Japanese versions have different English names:
    • Palms of Thunder is named as either "Burning Palm" in the PS2 version, or "Thunder Punch" in the remastered version.
    • Fiery Wheel is instead named as "Fire Wheel".
    • Booming Chop is instead called "Flame Chop".

Notes[]

  1. The name is a parody of kung-fu. It should be noted that kung-fu is an umbrella term for various forms of Chinese Martial Arts, so there are many types of kung-fu.
