So here we were, about to steal a priceless 17th-century samurai dagger from the same museum I've been casing. Funny how things work out sometimes.

"Prologue" is the introductory episode of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. It is set in Paris during the present day.

Story[]

Amnesia?[]

Amnesia? 2

Sly and Carmelita together at a party

Sly Cooper, who fakes his amnesia, is enjoying life on the other side of the law... in the company of Inspector Carmelita Fox. The two spent time together, attending a formal party one night in Paris, with Sly still keeping up his charade of having amnesia. Eventually, his kleptomaniac itch comes back, and he knows he needs to pull a heist.

As Sly states that master thieves only steal from others, he finds what he is looking for. His target is an upstart art mogul, who had opened up a new Paris museum, but he can literally smell a rat. He learns from reliable sources that the collector is dealing in black market antiques worth millions. As Sly is working on a plan one night, Bentley shows up directly in front of him, something that delighted the raccoon, as they have not seen each other for a while. However, Sly then knows that something was going on.

Bentley's Lab[]

Bentley's Lab 1

Bentley inspecting the Thievius Raccoonus

With Bentley's time off, he builds a new lab from scratch with his girlfriend and fellow tech wiz, Penelope. Soon after the two completed work on a top-secret project, Penelope had simply vanished, leaving Bentley searching frantically, only to find no clue whatsoever. What completely stunned him was that the pages of the Thievius Raccoonus, which were overflowing with the exploits and techniques of Sly's ancestors, started to disappear right before his eyes. With no time to waste, Bentley gathered his gear and raced off to Paris.

The Murray Demolition[]

The first thing Bentley did is locate Murray, who had been living his dream on the pro driving circuit, where his van has become more infamous rather than famous, for all of the crashes he caused. Unfortunately, due to his high insurance premiums, he is unable to find a sponsor and moves into the demolition derby, where he still remains undefeated. Murray drops everything to help out when Bentley showed up and explained the situation to him. The team van is also the key to the whole plan.

The Murray Demolition 1

Bentley revealing the time machine

As Inspector Fox is distracted with a new assignment, Sly takes the opportunity to slip away and meet up with the gang at one of their old Paris hideouts. Through an elaborate presentation, Bentley reveals to Sly and Murray the problem that is occurring with the Thievius Raccoonus, and Sly sees the whole scary picture. Someone or something is really erasing Cooper history. Then however, to their amazement, Bentley showed the two his solution: time travel. It turns out his top-secret project was constructing a time machine, and he now modifies the design so that it could fit onto the van. Bentley then explained that the only catch is the machine required an object from that era in order to travel to a particular time period. The changes to the Thievius Raccoonus indicated to the team that their first stop is Feudal Japan. To travel there, the team first need to steal a priceless 17th-century samurai dagger from the Paris museum, which is coincidentally the same one Sly was scoping earlier.

The Cooper Gang carries out a museum heist to steal a samurai dagger that will be used to travel back in time.

Paris Escape (The Getaway)[]

Now that the gang has stolen the samurai dagger, the plan to recover the Thievius Raccoonus was in motion, and despite the complication Sly causes in his relationship with Carmelita, there is no stopping now. Sly, however, thinks he will need the time machine to patch things up with her.

Paris Escape 1

Murray handing over the Thievius Raccoonus to Dimitri

Before making the time trip to Japan, the gang recruited Dimitri Lousteau to look after the Thievius Raccoonus, as it was far too risky for them to take it through time with them. Bentley invented a communication device to allow them to contact Dimitri regardless of their current time period. It was a perfect idea, as it allowed Dimitri to keep the team up to date with any changes to the book. As the trio travels through the time vortex, Sly knows that they are in for a really long trip.
