Reme Lousteau was the grandfather of Dimitri Lousteau. He was an expert diver who made a fortune looting underwater shipwrecks. His diving gear and treasure was later stolen from him by a young pirate known as Black Spot Pete, who buried the gear on Dagger Island. He was left a broken man and, with nothing left, began a family. Reme's grandson, Dimitri, grew up on his stories and vowed one day to reclaim the stolen gear.
- Reme's last name may be a slight nod to famous French marine researcher Jacques Cousteau.
- Jacques Cousteau invented and heavily used scuba gear, which would add another link between the two.
